Mountains in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is often called a “mini continent” because of its incredibly diverse landscapes, and nowhere is this more visible than in its mountains. The island’s rugged interior is filled with dramatic peaks, volcanic rock formations, deep valleys, and breathtaking viewpoints.

Many of these mountains can be reached by scenic drives or short hikes, offering visitors incredible panoramic views over the island and the Atlantic Ocean. From iconic landmarks to lesser-known natural gems, the mountains of Gran Canaria are among the most spectacular places to explore.

Roque Nublo
One of the most famous natural landmarks on the island, Roque Nublo is a massive volcanic rock formation rising nearly 80 meters above the surrounding plateau. A short hike leads to the base of this iconic monolith, where visitors are rewarded with stunning panoramic views across the mountains of Gran Canaria.

Pico de las Nieves
At 1,949 meters above sea level, Pico de las Nieves is the highest point on Gran Canaria. From the viewpoint near the summit, visitors can enjoy spectacular views over the island’s central mountains and, on clear days, even see Mount Teide on the neighboring island of Tenerife.

Roque Bentayga
Located near the village of Tejeda, Roque Bentayga is another impressive volcanic rock formation that played an important role for the island’s ancient inhabitants. Today it is a beautiful place to explore, offering incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Montaña de Gáldar
This volcanic hill near the historic town of Gáldar offers fantastic views over the northern coast of Gran Canaria. The short hike to the top rewards visitors with wide views of the town, the ocean, and the surrounding countryside.

Caldera de Bandama
Although technically a volcanic crater, the Caldera de Bandama is one of the most impressive geological formations on the island. From the rim you can look down into the enormous crater and enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscapes and vineyards.

Montaña de Tauro
Located in the southwest of the island near Mogán, Montaña de Tauro is known for its rugged terrain and beautiful mountain scenery. The area is popular for hiking and offers stunning views over the valleys and coastline of southern Gran Canaria.

Altavista Mountains
The Altavista area near Artenara offers some of the most dramatic mountain landscapes on the island. With deep ravines, rocky ridges, and incredible viewpoints, it is a perfect destination for nature lovers and photographers.

Montaña de Amagro
This lesser-known volcanic mountain in the northwest of Gran Canaria offers panoramic views over banana plantations, the northern coastline, and nearby villages. Because it is less visited, it provides a peaceful and authentic mountain experience.

Hidden mountain gems

Montaña de Hogarzales
Located in the remote western mountains near La Aldea, Montaña de Hogarzales offers one of the most impressive viewpoints on the island. From the summit you can see deep valleys, dramatic cliffs, and vast mountain landscapes stretching toward the ocean.

Montaña de Artenara
Near the highest village on the island, this mountain area offers incredible views over Roque Nublo and the central volcanic landscape. The surrounding area is known for its cave houses and traditional mountain scenery.

Montaña de Inagua
Part of a protected natural reserve, Montaña de Inagua is covered in Canary Island pine forests and is an important habitat for local wildlife. The peaceful setting and wild landscapes make it a hidden gem for hikers.

Montaña de Tamadaba
Within the Tamadaba Natural Park, this mountain area offers breathtaking views over steep cliffs, pine forests, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the best places on the island to experience untouched nature.
